In December 2025, the renewed opening of MUJI’s Chengdu Taikoo Li Global Flagship Store marked a new chapter for the brand. YIIIE Architects participated in the design of two Local Artwork installations, collaborating with MUJI to explore possibilities of localized practice and the idea of “localized moments” within Chengdu’s everyday life.

As a design studio rooted in Chengdu, we seek to view the familiar through an unfamiliar lens—to rediscover everyday life and reveal new worlds and new ways of living. What matters most is not the final form, but the process of observing and interpreting daily life through the temperament, rhythm, and lifestyle of Chengdu itself. Objects deeply embedded in local routines—such as bamboo chairs or woven bamboo mats—carry layers of cultural memory, tradition, and the evolving legacy of intangible craftsmanship. These fragments become the starting point for the wall surfaces and installations. Presented in the present moment, they act as subtle prompts, encouraging new perspectives shaped by shifting viewpoints. Together, these partial moments form the quiet pleasures of Chengdu life—an “extra-ordinary” everyday. Through this approach, we hope to re-see the daily life of “Chengdu,” allowing cultural symbols and underlying sensibilities to extend beyond the MUJI interior and remain connected to contemporary living.

1. Fitting Room Partition Installation

The wall installation in the changing area is constructed using 凉席 (liangxi), traditional woven bamboo mats commonly used in daily life in Chengdu. Liangxi are made from interwoven bamboo strips, combining flexibility with firmness, and are associated with summer comfort and tactile memories. Three different module sizes of bamboo blocks—40×40 mm, 90×40 mm, and 90×95 mm—are selected and arranged in differentiated zones, for a total of 8,716 units (each composed of two halves), allowing the mats to gently “rest” upon a concealed structural frame, forming the partition surface of the fitting rooms.

On the side facing the fitting rooms, sections of the bamboo mats are lifted and combined with a chair-leg structure, creating a waiting area and display surface in front of the fitting rooms. The chair-leg structure is derived from partial elements of traditional bamboo chairs commonly found in parks, plazas, and teahouses in Chengdu. Interlocking bamboo tubes cross and support one another, forming a stable yet informal structure that allows for resting and sitting—both familiar and quietly functional.

2. Cashier Background Wall Installation

Integrated with the cashier area, this wall installation occupies a transitional zone that every customer passes through before leaving the store. Bamboo poles are heated, bent, and bundled into 195 individual units, each arranged in staggered layers with varying lengths and cantilever depths in front of the background wall. Detached from the wall surface, the installation forms an interface with depth and stratification.

The natural curvature of the bamboo softens the rigidity and linear order often associated with commercial interiors, allowing the wall to appear as if it is in a state of growth. As the background to the cashier area, the installation does not aim to become a visual focal point. Instead, through a gradual retreat of layers, it allows the space to return—just before departure—to bodily perception and a quiet sense of nature.
